Millions of people visit Yosemite National Park every year to see the tall waterfalls and mountains. These mountains are a splendid sight when viewed form the valley floor. Lots of stores, hotels, and restaurants are needed to handle the crowds. Also, water, roads, and other service systems are part of the infrastructure (基础设施) that must be maintained.

Unfortunately, these systems are starting to break down. It’s not just in Yosemite but in national parks around the nation.

Yosemite is thirty years old according to Dennis Galvin, a National Park Service worker. The Park is not only old but worn out. Two or three times as many visitors come every year. That is too many visitors for the park to deal with.

Four years ago a storm washed out a water pipeline in the Grand Canyon. The National Park Service had to send water trucks to provide water for the visitors. Last month pipes almost broke again and roads had to be closed for a while.

Why hasn’t the National Park Service kept up the park repairs? There is a lack of money. The United States has 378 monuments, parks, and wilderness areas. Between three and four billion dollars are needed for repairs.

Yosemite is one national park that does have money for repairs. It has two hundred million dollars but cannot spend it any way it chooses. When the park workers started widening the road, they were forced to stop by the Sierra Club. The club claimed that the road work was damaging the Merced River that runs through the park.

A sierra Club lawyer, Julia Olson, feels that the infrastructure needs to be moved out of Yosemite. That way less pressure will be put on the already crowded park.

  1. According to the text, the mountains in Yosemite look most splendid when they are appreciated from ______.

  A. the bottom of the valleys B. the top of the mountains

  C. the side of the mountains D. the edge of the valleys

  visitors because ______.

  A. their transport management needs improving

3.The main problem of Yosemite National Park is its ______.

  A. rundown water pipes B. overcrowdedness

  A. an environmental group B. an information center

3.解析:这是一道细节推断题。根据第三段“That is too many visitors for the park to deal with.”可推断出Yosemite国家公园的主要问题是人太拥挤。

4.解析:这是一道细节推断题。倒数第二段“The club claimed that the road work was damaging the Merced River that runs through the park.”表明Sierra Club是一个环境保护组织。

Letter to Editor of TV Weekly

  Dear Sir/Madam,

I read Alison Burnham’s review of When we were 12,and I do not agree with her.I thought the programme was wonderful-I found the old news pictures really interesting-they helped to bring to life the stories the people were telling.

The programme reminds me of many things from my own childhood. For example, one day when I was about five,I was going to school on the bus by myself(this was the late 1960s).My mother had given me exactly the right money for a return ticket.I held out my hand with the money in it-one big coin on top of one little coin. The bus conductor took the big top coin only and she gave me a ticket, but it was a pink one for a single journey.I needed a white one for a return journey, but I was too frightend to say anything. When school finished for the day,I couldn’t catch the bus home-I had to walk.As a grown-up,whenever I’ve been in a situation where I need to say something or take some action, this early memory of my bus ride comes back to me,and I’m able to take control of the situation.

I would like to say to the director,Bret Chrysler, carry on making this kind of programme.Too much TV these days is quiz shows and so-called“reality programmes.”I appreciate the human story that can make me laugh and cry.

  Your faithfully,

  Chris Daniels

T-shirts out;uniforms in

School uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the U.S.A.That’s no surprise, because they offer many benefits. They immediately end the powerful social sorting and labeling(标记)that come from clothing. If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughted at for wearing the“wrong”clothes.

Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule-wanting to look just like their friends. The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers;school uniforms tear those barriers down.

As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purpose and duties. For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform,he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol(象征)of law and order. The uniform means to the wearer his of her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets.People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education.

Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children’s “creativity.”First,as noted above, the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express their individuality(个性).They just copy their classmates.Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like. While they’re in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and math;this should take up all the creativity they have.Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.

  1.In Paragraph 1,the word“benefits”probably means .

  A.tasks B.messages C.differences D.advantages

2.From the passage we learn that uniforms in general .

A.prevent the wearers from being laughed at B.help the wearers keep their duties in mind

C.are seen as a symbol of power D.help to create social barriers

3.Some people are against school uniforms because .

A.they fail to realize that students have accepted the uniforms

B.they believe that uniforms will make students less creative

C.they don’t agree that uniforms can remove social barriers

D.they think that school uniforms are too popular

4.The author would probably agree that .

A.it makes no difference whether to wear school uniforms or not

B.students’individuality may not come from school education

C.students’ creativity is related to the clothes they choose

D.school uniforms help to create equality among students

  答案 1.D 2.B 3 .B 4.D

The Americans believe that anybody can become President of the United States. In a recent Hollywood comedy(喜剧), that is exactly what happens.

Dave Kovic, played by Kevin Kline, is a kind-hearted man who runs a business that finds people jobs. He leads a typical(典型的)American way of life, except for one thing-he looks exactly like the President, Bill Mitchell. In fact, the only thing that makes him different from the nation’s leader is that he is very nice!

The President has started using look-alikes during some public appearances. Dave is offered a chance to “serve his country” by becoming one. However, things go wrong. The President becomes very ill and Dave ends up acting as the President forever.

Director Ivan Reitman, who made the popular and successful comedies like Twins, Ghostbusters and Legal Eagles, could have gone for easy laughs by making fun of the American government. Instead, Dave is an attractive comedy about an ordinary man in extraordinary situations. Kevin Kline gives a double performance as Dave and the President, and Sigourney Weaver is at her best as his First Lady. The love story that develops between her role and Dave is a real classic(经典).

The film is 100% American. However, if you’ve ever felt that anybody could do a better job running the country than the people in power, then you’ll enjoy Dave!

  1. What is the purpose of the text?

  A. To tell the reader about the American government.

  B. To discuss the Americans’ ideas about the President.

  C. To make a comparison between Dave and other films.

  D. To introduce a new film to the reader.

  2. Who plays the role of the President in the film?

  A. Sigourney Weaver.

  B. Kevin Kline.

  C. Bill Mitchell.

  D. Ivan Reitman.

  3. The underlined word“one”in the 3rd paragraph refers to______.

  A. the President B. the director C. an actor D. a look-alike

  4. Which of the following is best supported by the text?

  A. The author makes fun of the President. B. The author thinks highly of the film.

  C. The author is a fan of Hollywood comedies.

  D. The author wishes to become the American President.

  答案 1. D 2. B 3. D 4. B
